He has Windows Vista on his old laptop. I would like to move his old hard drive to his new laptop. With any version of Microsoft Windows up to 2000, this generally was not a problem, with the exception of various driver issues. Now, Microsoft has sabotaged its OS to make this more difficult. This sabotage started with Windows XP. Both laptops are licensed to run Vista. Will I have any problems if I simply move the drive? What kind of precaustions should I take? Is there anything I need to? ==================================================== Chris Baker -- Austin, Texas Certified Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming chris(at)chrisbaker(dot)net -- www.chrisbaker.net http://www.myspace.com/algernonsidney http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris_Baker/1271569620 "When you stop growing, you start dying." My suggestion, burn all the data to either another external h/drive or DVD's....then try the switch (after going into Device Manager) and remove the drivers...I actually did this prior to switching my daughter's and it still DID NOT work. The easier method may be to use cloning software to clone from the original laptop to the new one (it has a hard drive in it as well?)....the club just recently had a backup deal from Acronis on Drive Image Home 2009. I would suggest using software such as this rather than removing one drive and replacing it with the vista drive (unless the hardware is exactly the same)....I recently had to purchase a new drive for my 5 year old Dell....I am still waiting to see if my original WinXP is going to be validated on the new hard drive...I have been told by a previous MSoft employee that if you change more than 3 components (hardware), then the OS won't boot. We were told this AFTER changing the board/ram on my daughter-in-laws machine. I have not had any luck in merely changing the board out....it usually results in a complete re-install and re-building...I just purchased the Acronis and will try it the next time I need a backup restored or move data... If you don't want to purchase disk imaging software as the Acronis, I would either back-up the data as mentioned above OR you might try an external usb from the original vista and copy manually to the other hard drive (Vista?)...I would need more info on the two systems before I could offer any further suggestions.
