Thank you, Lita:
<<Have you tried knoppix [?]>>
<<...install the "failing" drive into another system as
slave and boot [from that] (if you have one)>>
That's my plan so far, except that my Knoppix CD is sleeping over at a
client's house this week. She needs it worse that I <grin>.
Right now, the little beastie is running fine in SAFE mode, though the temp
has been creeping up from 91°F to 126° (at last check). I was running over
130° when it started failing yesterday but, again, the Linux partition ran
fine at the same high temps (go figure. <@#$!@R>). So, I'm not sure if temp
had anything to do with the failure unless it's NOT using some vulnerable
part that Windows "requires".
More will be revealed, as they say.
>From Ross:
<<Ubuntu forums and found this thread (and this review)
about Gutsy automatically mounting windows partitions
unless they were improperly shut down, something about
it detecting some sort of unclean shutdown flag on the
partition.>>
Hmmm... Might be. I'll have to review your threads to be sure. My worry is
that 3 "data only" partitions on the same drive wouldn't read (but *might*
show the same "bad shutdown" flag) and... The shared drive on another
machine that is working fine wouldn't show its directory either. (All in
addition to the 2 NTFS "boot" partitions)
<growling to self...> And yes, I DO have SpyBot... Somewhere, I think...
Don't know that I've ever run it though. <sheepish grin>
I agree with you that there's certainly a difference between a virus and
spyware. There ARE actual viruses out there that do nothing but damage
files and performance, but most virii(?) are now intended to turn our boxes
into zombies - very sophisticated stuff. My observation was that, nowadays,
these pirate viruses and the spyware apps differ only in the kinds of
information they gather for their masters - marketing data versus private
files, passwords and identity stuff.

Hey DJ,
Have you tried knoppix to see if you can see the partitions with
it...sometimes when all else fails....good old Knoppix will allow me to
save data to another drive (maybe an external h/d).
Just a thought....otherwise, install the "failing" drive into another
system as slave and boot another windows system (if you have one) to allow
for removal of needed data....this is what I resort to for my
clients/friends who have to have the data and can't get it any other way.
Let me know if you want to pursue this as I have eight systems at home that
I could try it with.
Sincerely,
Lita Letourneau
