Hello All:
Here I go with another plea for help... and thanks to all who reply or get
a kick out of it.
My best machine (one of six) is on the fritz. (See data below) First one of
the boot options would arbitrarily freeze in the middle of of a session.
Then, when I got used to relying on the other boot option, it started
freezing too.
It got worse. Anytime I tried to copy or move data, it froze. Then, as I
tried to get the data off the dying partitons, it started freezing in SAFE
mode and SAFE W/ Command Line. Now, one boot option will freeze after the
GiveIO.sys driver is loaded. The other worked for a time and now does the
same. I even tried to run the Recovery CD on it and the CD failed to boot!
Trouble is there's an Ubuntu Linux boot option on it that runs like
gangbusters! Unfortunately, I'm not able to get any shared service under
SMB to show me a directory. I can see all the shares but no directories.
There is one share from another computer and three additional partitions
that *should* show correctly. So far, the indications tell me it's a Linux
setting and not evidence the partitions are bad. Besides, the external
share is up and running WinXP so I can send email.
Oh yeah, the data:
MB: AOpen NKV 400...
BIOS: Phoenix/Award V6.0; 2004-11-22
Proc: AMD Athlon 1900+ 1.4 GHz
RAM: 3.14 Gb
Video: nVidia; GEForce FX 5200 Ultra; 128 Mb
HD1: 60 Gb
Boot-1: WinXP SP-2, etc.
Boot-2: Ubuntu Linux 7.10 Gutzy
HD-2: 160 MHz
Boot-3: WinXP, SP-2, etc.
Data13: ~40 Gb
Backup12: ~40 Gb
Backup14: ~40 Gb
I'm supposed to be the tech here. It's embarrassing.

Why do we have to watch M$ with the same skepticism we reserve for viruses
& junkware?
* T2STL: Time to switch to Linux.
