From POBox-LWD-Austin at pobox.com Wed Dec 19 03:41:48 2007 From: POBox-LWD-Austin at pobox.com (Loyd W. Dreher) Date: Wed, 19 Dec 2007 03:41:48 -0600 Subject: [Windows SIG] Windows SIG Meeting; Thursday, 2007-12-20 ; 6:30 PM Message-ID: <20071219094345.RXRG2677.hrndva-omta06.mail.rr.com@Systemax_64.pobox.com> Windows SIG Meeting When: Thursday, December 20, 2007 6:30 PM Where: Old Quarry Library 7051 Village Center Dr. Adjacent to HEB off Far West Blvd I am sending this to the Windows and Local list server subscribers. If you already subscribed to the Local List server we invite you to also join the Windows List server. Go to the CCAustin.org ( www.ccaustin,org ) then click on the Listservers button on the horizontal bar below the Computer Club of Austin banner. Bring your questions primarily about Linux or Microsoft windows. We will collectively try to answer your questions. If we can't answer it at the meeting it will be noted and we will try to come find an answers later. This meeting I would like to discuss software, particularly free software, the free software Foundation, The open source concept , GNU, and the SourceForge, a primary opensource where source code for a program can be downloaded and is a depository where multi platform compilations (Linux, Unix, Solaris, MAC OS/X (BSD-Unix) and MSWindows, etc,) packages of a program are available. YES, I will explain all the terminology used here, YES, the same program will run on nearly any of the standard computers that you will ever have. We will also discuss who does the work and why such marvellous superior software is being created maintained today. I would ask you to help now and in the future to compile a list of subjects that you would like to be covered in the Windows SIG in 2008. If you would, when you have a question about a subject or problem you have encountered, that you send an email to me, Loyd Dreher, at the address listed on the Windows SIG page or call my answering machine at 512-342-2305. Please, use that address instead of the list server to respond to this messages. I will summarize requests and suggestions and try to send the information out periodically through the list server so everyone can see what are the general interests. Message-ID: <200712270536.lBR5aFW8024936@www.theccwizards.com> I'm running a little stumped folks, and I could use your help. Having replaced the 160 MB HDD that failed recently, I expected the new one to actually run when Windows started up, but something weird happened after I finished partitioning, formatting and restoring all the data to it. Worse, I can't figure out what I might have done to cause the problem and that leaves me very few clues to work with. The drive shows up just fine in the BIOS and in the Disk Management utility within the Administrative Tools section. Trouble is, it no longer shows any partitions or data!!! All the work it took to restore the drive and the data just evaporated. 1. Tried System Restore; couldn't fix it. 2. Installing WinXP to a new partition didn't work, the drive partition portion of the Setup doesn't see any partitions on the new drive. 3. Tried to use the DrivePart tool from the Restore CD and *IT* didn't see the partitions either! 4. Tried the FixMBR applet as well, but no dice, and by that time, I was too nervous about screwing things up to try the FixBoot applet. 5. Then, to really convince myself that WinXP had gone to lunch, I tried the Knoppix 5.0.1 CD and low and behold, the partitions were all there!!! The Knoppix partition tool saw all the partitions (but only 2 of 5 of the drive names and Konqueror saw ALL 5 names). (A little weird but hey, it's Linux, I figured the mileage may vary) 6. When I looked at the properties under Knoppix, the partitions were not hidden. It showed 2 primary NTFS partitions and 3x32MB FAT32 logical drives in the extended partition. 7. Oh yes, and the Acronis backup software doesn't see the partitions either but if it just looks to WinXP for the drive data, that's to be expected. No, I don't have their partition tool. So, I sit here (again) wondering if there's some leetle-used command somewhere that will save me the trouble of going through the process again (re-partitioning this (brand new) drive and restoring the last backup). Sadly, there are several files in there that I will lose because I'd hadn't backed them up before WinXP stopped seeing the partitions.
