Longevity: 30+ years; that's good since new technology will come along to supplant it. RE (the new abbreviation in the BD (Blu-ray Disc) world for Re-Writeable): 1000+ re-writes; that's good if you aren't using it as a hard disk. You might be surprised how many times you write and re-write to your hard disk, but it includes the issue of needing defragmentation maintenance. I saw nothing about that issue for BD other than the mention about Data Zones that might be an indicator of scattered unusable space. Since most optical media was developed for data storage and retrieval, I would see it primarily for backup purposes rather than operating environment. I think the BD-RE disks could be rather costly as well -- maybe $50 each? It will require a bit of creative thinking to decide on the best way to use these for specific storage -- photos for example. You might want to accumulate 25 GB before even burning the first one, then maybe holding until you have that much more before adding to it. I initially was going to ignore the technology but I keep computers a bit longer than other people and I don't like having to re-rig for technology about six months after getting a new system. I might not be able to avoid that, though. Typically, mfgrs do not and cannot afford to have the leading edge of the new stuff installed in high-volume computers. If you get a new computer with Blu-ray burners in them, you will probably not have the latest capabilities. Jim -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I read the 1st edition and it was excellent. It gave me ideas that work and is easy to read. There is one catch: the book is free only to paid subscribers of the Windows Secrets newsletter. You can be a subscriber for ANY amount of money, and renewal is annual. I believe I pay $15 per year, or maybe $5. The newsletter is well worth $15/year and is much better than the free one (which is also very good). With the paid subscription you get several "free" eBooks per year. You can also buy the eBook for $10. You get the newsletter by updating your preferences online. I suppose for new subscribers it will be available after your paid subscription is in place.
