From dierdorf at io.com Mon Mar 8 03:27:23 2010 From: dierdorf at io.com (John Dierdorf) Date: Mon, 8 Mar 2010 03:27:23 -0600 Subject: [Linux SIG] March Meeting of LBSIG Message-ID: <201003080327.23904.dierdorf@io.com> This month's meeting of the Linux SIG will be held this Tuesday, the 9th, at the usual time and place -- 8109 Greenslope Drive, 6 PM informal and 7 PM formal presentation. This month I plan to talk about and demonstrate browsers. In particular, I'll show Swiftfox, which is a version of Firefox compiled strictly for Linux, Opera, and Google Chrome, and maybe even throw in Ubuntu's "vanilla" browsers, Konqueror for KDE and Epiphany for Gnome. As one would expect, they are MOSTLY the same with respect to rendering web pages, but with the exception of Konqueror and Epiphany, the other browsers are all faster than Firefox. I've got a CD of Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 3 if anybody is interested. It still has the "old" color style, though. As you may have read, Lucid will have a very, very different color scheme for Gnome compared to the brown/orange that has defined Ubuntu for a long time. As usual, carbs and caffeine will be on hand. -- John Dierdorf Austin, TX www.io.com/~dierdorf From dierdorf at io.com Thu Mar 11 17:47:45 2010 From: dierdorf at io.com (John Dierdorf) Date: Thu, 11 Mar 2010 17:47:45 -0600 Subject: [Linux SIG] SWSW Linux Get-Together Message-ID: <201003111747.45815.dierdorf@io.com> Check this url: http://4683591273801876309-a-1802744773732722657-s- sites.googlegroups.com/site/stephengutknecht/austinlinux/AustinLinux_2010-03-14_Party003.pdf for a flyer about the free Linux open house/party on Sunday afternoon, 1-4 PM, Texas Coworking, 200 E. 6th Street, 3rd floor. What finally did the trick was this: I used the Synaptic Package Manager to uninstall Adobe Flash. Then I installed swfdec-mozilla and swfdec-gnome. These are respectively, "Mozilla plugin for SWF files (Macromedia Flash)" and "Tools to play SWF files (Macromedia Flash) on GNOME". Now the Street view function in Google Maps works just fine.
