I have been using Kubuntu for some time, and I really like it. But I am a long way from really mastering it. I believe it may keep my brain from growing old faster than it already has, so I keep at it. It may be old news to many of you, but I just happened across it, found it quite interesting, and thought I should share it with you. Coffee and snacks as usual. This month will be a kind of grab-bag, since I have three or four topics I'd like to cover. One will be the Alpha 5 release of Ubuntu Karmic, which to be perfectly honest has nothing new compared to the Alpha 4 I showed off last month. Canonical is in polish, polish, polish mode by now, with seven weeks until the formal release of v9.10. Other topics include the excellent screen capture AND EDIT program Shutter, and an introduction to SVG graphics -- how they are different and when and why to use them. Actually, I'll probably extend that "when and why" to include ALL graphical formats -- JPG, GIF, TIF, PNG, RAW, BMP, EPS, ... See you on Tuesday. -- John Dierdorf Austin, TX www.io.com/~dierdorf From dierdorf at io.com Sun Sep 20 19:59:14 2009 From: dierdorf at io.com (John Dierdorf) Date: Sun, 20 Sep 2009 19:59:14 -0500 Subject: [Linux SIG] Ubuntu Releases Message-ID: <200909201959.14650.dierdorf@io.com> You will be happy to know that Mark Shuttleworth has officially decreed, in his capacity as Lord High Everything of Ubuntu, that version 10.04 will be known as Lucid Lynx. (It will be a LTS release, by the way.) (Keeping the Adjective-Animal theme, version 10.10 COULD then be known as Mammoth Mammoth, who knows.) BTW, Alpha 6 of Karmic (v9.10) is out. That's the last Alpha before next month's formal release. -- John Dierdorf Austin, TX www.io.com/~dierdorf From wyllys at ischool.utexas.edu Sun Sep 20 20:03:28 2009 From: wyllys at ischool.utexas.edu (Ronald Wyllys) Date: Sun, 20 Sep 2009 20:03:28 -0500 Subject: [Linux SIG] Ubuntu Releases In-Reply-To: <200909201959.14650.dierdorf@io.com> References: <200909201959.14650.dierdorf@io.com> Message-ID: <4AB6D0E0.9010003@ischool.utexas.edu> Excellent! If nothing else, that'll give me more time to do a complete overview of the official Ubuntu 9.10 at the November meeting. See you guys on Tuesday November 10th. -- John Dierdorf Austin, TX www.io.com/~dierdorf
