Secretary's Report: (Kelly Butler) Kelly summarized the 7/28/08 BoD
meeting minutes. Don moved, Errol seconded and the board approved the
minutes of the meeting. 

Treasurer's Report: (Steve Davol) Steve reported a $19.55 loss for July,
attributing it mostly to unrealized loss on the bond fund. YTD loss was
$624.38 for the same reason. 

Web Site Review Committee: Kelly related a recent conversation with Loyd
in which he has continued development of the new web site with Apache
server, Sunbird calendar, and PHP pages. Steve asked about continuity of
support and maintenance for the new site and Kelly suggested that DJ and
perhaps David Gray and others will be able to assist Loyd in continued
development and operation of the web site. 

Membership Report: (Don Jones) Don reported that membership is up to 84,
including a lottery winner form the last general meeting. 

Programs Report: (Errol Olson) Errol announced that the September program
will feature Mike Goggin, Jim Fahrenkopf and perhaps a representative of
the Austin Linux Group in a panel discussion about wireless PDAs
including the Apple iphone 3G, Samsung I-760. Additional possibilities
include a representative from PC Magazine, Gene Barlow on Acronis
products, a tour of the UT MMC (Ranger) computer and a talk by John
Terpstra from the Austin Linux Group on "What's Keeping Linux
Back." 


Old Business: 

Website Anti Spam: DJ reported some progress designing a Word Press email
submission form. He will meet soon with Jeff Bernier. He is also
developing a new calendar that will be compatible with Outlook. 

Errol reported that NWRC has extended our 1st Thursday reservation for
the general meeting through June 2009. Subsequently, NWRC will close for
renovations. 

Kelly announced that, since the North Village library is scheduled to
close for December and January, that he has booked Saturday morning, Dec
13th at Old Quarry and Saturday morning, Dec 27th at Howson for possible
use by the Beginners and MSO Beginners SIGs. 

Kelly reported Melvin Jackson saying in a phone conversation on 7/28/08
that the Java SIG met in June at the home of a disabled member but did
not meet in July. Kelly reports that emails to the posted address
java_sig_leader at hotmail.com are bouncing again and that the Java web page
linked from the CCAustin.org web page still features 3-year old
announcements, in spite of Kelly's repeated requests to remedy the
outdated information. Board members requested that Kelly contact Melvin
for permission to post his telephone number on the web site so that
prospective attendees have some method of connecting with the SIG. Kelly
read Bylaw 7.6 which deals with the requirements for keeping a SIG in
good standing.

Updates are completed: 

Java SIG: 
Altered at Mr Jackson's request to show as "Temporarily Inactive".
Removed the two links pending an expected update and confirmed the link
to ACC's business Campus at Highland Mall. 

Windows SIG: 
Fixed the time reference to reflect that we're meeting at Old Quarry
through December. Also confirmed that the calendar had the dates too.
Confirmed the link to Old Quarry Library. Waiting for confirmation on an
update to Les Carolton's reference. 

Office SIG: 
Updated references to the Yahoo Group (Office SIG), confirmed the new
meeting times and the link to find the Old Quarry Library. 

Sorry to miss the board meeting last night. I've been up to my ears
preparing for a job interview. It went well, but of course, I'm at bit
frazzled.

Treasurer's Report: (Steve Davol) Steve reported a $78.68 gain for August 
and a YTD loss of $545.70. He expects a large loss in September due to 
recent financial market turmoil.

Web Site Review Committee: Loyd reported slight progress on the web site 
since his last report. (After the meeting adjourned Loyd demonstrated 
sample SIG web pages for the new web site.)

Membership Report: (Don Jones) Don reported that membership is up to 85, 
including a lottery winner form the last general meeting. Another long-time 
Windows SIG attendee is also expected to join.

Programs Report: (Errol Olson) Errol announced that the October program 
will be John Terpstra from the Austin Linux Users Group on "What's Keeping 
Linux Back." Mike revealed that the talk may address Linux barriers like 
computer industry economics and Windows BIOS Lockdowns. Gene Barlow from 
Acronis has proposed a "webinar" on Acronis products which the board 
welcomed. Pending programs include a tour of the UT MMC (Ranger) computer, 
a talk by UT futurist Dr. Chapman and a robotics demonstration by ITT 
students.


Old Business:

Website Anti Spam: Mike, DJ and Jeff Bernier are still working on a 
solution to the web site spam problem.

Java SIG: Kelly reported that the Java SIG page on CCAustin.org still 
retains the link to a page with 3 year old information and that emails to 
the posted Java SIG leader address still bounce. Melvin Jackson reported in 
a phone conversation in late August that his email is out though he can 
receive text messages on his telephone. He added that Java will not meet in 
August but probably will meet in September and October. It will not meet in 
November and December due to holiday schedule conflicts. Kelly resolved to 
pursue updates for the Java SIG web information and have Melvin's phone 
number posted on the web site so that prospective Java SIG attendees will 
have a means of communicating with the SIG leader.

BoD List Server problems: Kelly reported continued inability to 
receive  CCAustin BoD list server emails and a recent inability to send 
emails to the list. Speculation ensued as to the cause of the blockage. He 
re-registered this afternoon for BoD and Local and will report the outcome. 
Mike said Jeff Bernier said Kelly's registration looked OK. At least two 
other CCA members with ATT/Yahoo DSL service are also experiencing list 
server blockages.

Mike said he is looking for another meeting site for the Internet SIG as, 
starting in October, the Howson library will be closed on Thursdays. A 
green flyer listing library schedules indicates that North Village will 
also close Thursdays and that Old Quarry will close Fridays.


New Business:

Mike said Lee Jones reminded him to appoint a Nominating committee. Mike, 
Loyd, Steve and Kelly all agreed (slightly reluctantly) to serve another 
year but each expressed willingness to yield his office to another. Don 
Jones will ask Dave Mead whether he's willing to continue as 2nd VP in 
2009. The Bylaws require the Nominating Committee to report at the October 
(2nd) General Meeting.

Mike adjourned the meeting at 7:26pm.

Mike opened the meeting at 6:40pm. 

Secretary's Report: (Kelly Butler) Kelly summarized the 8/25/08 BoD meeting minutes. Mike moved, Don seconded and the board approved them. 

Treasurer's Report: (Steve Davol) Steve reported a $78.68 gain for August and a YTD loss of $545.70. He expects a large loss in September due to recent financial market turmoil. 

Web Site Review Committee: Loyd reported slight progress on the web site since his last report. (After the meeting adjourned Loyd demonstrated sample SIG web pages for the new web site.) 

Membership Report: (Don Jones) Don reported that membership is up to 85, including a lottery winner form the last general meeting. Another long-time Windows SIG attendee is also expected to join. 

Programs Report: (Errol Olson) Errol announced that the October program will be John Terpstra from the Austin Linux Users Group on "What's Keeping Linux Back." Mike revealed that the talk may address Linux barriers like computer industry economics and Windows BIOS Lockdowns. Gene Barlow from Acronis has proposed a "webinar" on Acronis products which the board welcomed. Pending programs include a tour of the UT MMC (Ranger) computer, a talk by UT futurist Dr. Chapman and a robotics demonstration by ITT students. 


Old Business: 

Website Anti Spam: Mike, DJ and Jeff Bernier are still working on a solution to the web site spam problem. 

Java SIG: Kelly reported that the Java SIG page on CCAustin.org still retains the link to a page with 3 year old information and that emails to the posted Java SIG leader address still bounce. Melvin Jackson reported in a phone conversation in late August that his email is out though he can receive text messages on his telephone. He added that Java will not meet in August but probably will meet in September and October. It will not meet in November and December due to holiday schedule conflicts. Kelly resolved to pursue updates for the Java SIG web information and have Melvin's phone number posted on the web site so that prospective Java SIG attendees will have a means of communicating with the SIG leader. 

BoD List Server problems: Kelly reported continued inability to receive  CCAustin BoD list server emails and a recent inability to send emails to the list. Speculation ensued as to the cause of the blockage. He re-registered this afternoon for BoD and Local and will report the outcome. Mike said Jeff Bernier said Kelly's registration looked OK. At least two other CCA members with ATT/Yahoo DSL service are also experiencing list server blockages. 

Mike said he is looking for another meeting site for the Internet SIG as, starting in October, the Howson library will be closed on Thursdays. A green flyer listing library schedules indicates that North Village will also close Thursdays and that Old Quarry will close Fridays. 


New Business: 

Mike said Lee Jones reminded him to appoint a Nominating committee. Mike, Loyd, Steve and Kelly all agreed (slightly reluctantly) to serve another year but each expressed willingness to yield his office to another. Don Jones will ask Dave Mead whether he's willing to continue as 2nd VP in 2009. The Bylaws require the Nominating Committee to report at the October (2nd) General Meeting. 

Mike adjourned the meeting at 7:26pm.
