Secretary's Report: (Kelly Butler) Kelly summarized the 6/23/08 BoD meeting minutes. Jimmy moved, Steve seconded and the board approved the minutes of the meeting. Treasurer's Report: (Steve Davol) Steve reported a $219.18 loss for June, attributing it mostly to unrealized loss on the bond fund. YTD loss was $604.83 for the same reason. Web Site Review Committee: Loyd set up a laptop computer and demonstrated a basic home page for the new website. He expects to have a server running at his home in about 2 weeks and will circulate its IP address to the board for review. Membership Report: (Don Jones) Don reported that membership is up to 82, the latest member having won his membership at the last general meeting. Programs Report: (Errol Olson) Errol reported a pending program for August by a spokesman from ITT Technical Institute on trends in the computer related educational/certification marketplace. Jim Allen volunteered an alternate August program on photo manipulation. Other prospective talks include Ted Green from Total Access Networks and Intel. Ms. Clark from the state cancelled her planned talk and there has been no progress on a program to visit the UT MMC (Ranger) computer. Old Business: DJ discussed three methods to reduce the spam received by officers and SIG leaders due to their email addresses being posted on our web site. They include MailTo dialog boxes that allow a sender to enter an email but withhold the email address. Loyd demonstrated that CCAustin.org list server subscribers may access the email databases. DJ said that posting email addresses as graphic images is no longer effective as the spammers can automatically OCR such images. DJ asked for a motion to remove all email addresses from the web site to avoid the spam problem. Don so moved, Kelly seconded and after considerable discussion the board passed this resolution. Loyd explained how his new web site design will conceal email addresses from unauthorized users. It will use the Apache server, Sunbird calendar and SQL database. Errol repeated last month's report that the General Meeting is currently booked at NWRC for all remaining 1st Thursdays 2008 but that NWRC would close for renovations in 2009. Kelly reported the North Village librarian's confirmation that the NV library is tentatively scheduled to close around Thanksgiving and reopen on February 1st. New Business: Don asked whether the terms of CCA memberships awarded at the general meeting drawings should terminate at year end. This could shortchange people who win their memberships late in the year. On the other hand, giving them a fixed one-year memberships would frustrate our policy to align all memberships with the calendar year. A third alternative, having the membership run through to the following year's end, would be overly generous with a membership term running up to 2 years. Kelly moved and Don seconded a motion to award memberships with terms extending to the end of the following year. Considerable discussion ensued and Don moved to amend the origional motion such that only memberships won after June would be extended. DJ seconded and the amendment passed. The origional motion passed subsequently. Steve reported a $25 expense from the Wireless PDA SIG and Don explained that Ventana Del Sol now charges the SIG $40 for use of their meeting room though the fee also covers sandwiches and drinks. SIG attendees chip in the $15 difference. Kelly moved and DJ seconded a motion to authorize a one-time $25 reimbursement from the CCA treasury. Don added that the PDA Wireless SIG is considering a joint meeting with the Austin Mobile Wireless SIG at Sherlocks to avoid such fees. Jimmy announced that Denny's has closed and that the Saturday morning breakfasts for the MSO Beginners SIG and Beginners SIG will move to the San Francisco Bakery and Cafe at 2900 Anderson Ln. Other restaurants were suggested including Waterloo on Burnet Rd., the Whataburger on Anderson Ln. and the bowling alley near Sherlocks. Loyd adjourned the meeting at 7:55pm. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
